Southampton CTC

Southampton CTC is the local CTC group for the area covering Southampton, Romsey, Eastleigh, Chandler's Ford and Waterside, and we regularly welcome riders from outside this area. We offer a range of cycle rides and also organise special events throughout the year. We also campaign locally for better cycle facilities.

About The Group

Who we are and what we do

The CTC is the national cycling charity; it inspires and helps people to cycle and keep cycling. It encourages all types of cycling, on the road or off it.  It supports you if you already ride, or would like to ride, to work or school, for health, touring, sport and leisure – or just because it’s fun. Members of Southampton CTC range from those who like to ride 10-20 miles to those who ride Sportifs and events of over 1000km. Some members also enjoy touring in the UK and abroad.

What you need:

Bike: all you need is a roadworthy bike. You’ll find life a lot easier on a reasonably lightweight road or touring bike rather than a heavy bike mountain bike with knobbly tyres. Don’t be put off trying one of our rides because you think you don’t have the right bike. We can advise on how you can adapt your existing bike and provide expert advice if you want to buy a new one.

Clothing: Specialist clothing and a helmet are optional. A light, waterproof jacket is almost essential for the British climate. Otherwise just bring something to drink, a spare inner tube and tyre levers and lights for winter and evening rides. Rides stop for refreshments at regular intervals but you may like to pack a cereal bar or similar as emergency rations.

Joining a CTC ride
You do not have to be a member of CTC to come on the rides. Feel free to come on three or four rides and see if it works for you. After that we encourage you to join as the benefits of membership, particularly the insurance and discounts, are well worth the subscription. See

Our regular rides & events

About our rides

Our rides range from short, easy rides suitable for novice cyclists to more challenging rides that are longer and faster. We run regular Saturday and Sunday rides, weekday evening rides in the summer and Wednesday social night in the clubroom. Some of our rides are combined with Winchester CTC. Most rides are on-road but we occasionally venture off-road, especially in the drier summer months.
Our Saturday rides are generally gentle-paced and Sunday rides moderate or faster/longer. Half-day rides usually include a cafe stop and daily rides both a cafe and pub-lunch stop, occasionally afternoon tea as well.

Starting in May we have Thursday evening rides, where we aim to take advantage of the finer and lighter summer evenings, meeting at 7pm and riding out to a pleasant country pub, typically about 10-15 miles away. Don’t forget to bring lights!

The rides start from a number of locations around Southampton and Romsey. For latest information about the rides see this Website and our Facebook and Google Group pages.
