A Network of Electric Bicycles are set up in Henley-On-Thames

Aug 2013 - Now updated with even more hire and charge points. The CTC team in Henley-On-Thames are gearing up to host the first Electric Bicycle Network in the Chilterns!
Chiltern Valley Winery have joined the EBN

The picturesque town of Henley-On-Thames in Oxfordshire is already a real hub for tourists and there is a strong network of businesses there to cater for them. The new Electric Bicycle Network is aimed at  increasing  the number of cycle users in the town, increasing cycle tourism and will hopefully lead to a much wider change in transport and leisure behaviours.

We’re very excited to have an Electric Bike Network in Henley as part of Cycle Chilterns

Cycle Chilterns attend the Herts County Show

The sunshine brought out the crowds, with 35,000 people attending over two days. For Cycle Chilterns, the busy show was the perfect opportunity to speak about cycling in the Chilterns.

Cycle Chilterns is a new project and the Herts Show was a fantastic opportunity to get our message out and tell people about who we are and what we are doing, along with our plans for this year and next.

The Shoretrax Portable Mountain Bike Trail gave people a chance to give mountain biking a go. The 60 metre timber track was a hit with riders of all ages and abilities, with 500 riders signing up to have a go on the bikes supplied by Lovelo Cycle Works in Berkhamstead. Having Shoretrax is a great way of giving people a chance to give mountain biking a go.

CTC's Greg Woodford rides the Chiltern 100 sportive

Riding as CTC-affiliated Reading Cycling Club, we had entered a team for the sportive on the 2 June 2013. Great scenery and fantastic weather made for a fabulous but hard ride.
Three riders on a climb

It was only a matter of time, I thought, as I saw fellow rider Paul’s back receding into the distance. We were climbing a steep hill and he can always get me on hills. I looked around to see Nick was still there grinding away, his whole body heaving as he forced his bike up the steep section. He looks like I feel, I thought. But good, we can catch Paul up on the flat - he had always soft-pedalled a little waiting for us.

A gentle ride through rolling Chilterns countryside

Sara Randle, Senior Development Officer for the Cycle Chilterns project, takes us through a quiet little 13 mile circular route in the Chiltern Hills, suitable for a wide range of abilities.
Bluebell riding in the Chilterns

Living on the edge of the Chilterns, I have a wealth of good riding on my doorstep, so when somebody asks me where to ride it’s not easy to narrow it down. One of my favourite little rides is officially known as Herts Recreation route 6 , a circular 13 mile route through quiet country lanes, suitable for families and a range of abilities.

Third Place of the CTC Volunteer Group - Aston Hill MTB Group

Aston Hill Mountain Bike Club was nominated for the Best Voluntary Group Achievement of 2012 after ‘Surface to Air’, the downhill mountain bike trail was built by volunteers from the club.

The trail replaced one of the existing downhill trails and in doing so, brought the area up to par with some of the best downhill sites in England.

The club had to overcome a number of challenges, not least creating a timber retaining wall for long sections of trail and accessing the steep hillside on foot and with diggers and dumpers to both build and surface the trail. This work was made even more challenging as they had to put up with one of the wettest summers on record for 100 years.

For beautiful cycling in the countryside, all less than an hour by train from London, the Chilterns is the place to go!
Chilterns Heritage routes - Milton signage

When I found out that I was going to help with the Chilterns project, I knew that I had to go cycling there to check the area out. After some research, I chose Amersham (a gateway town for the project) as a base because it has good transport links to London and some great routes too. In particular, there is a series of three heritage circular rides that start and end in Amersham.

An Electric Bike Network for the Chilterns

The Chilterns are soon to be the latest tourist area to host an Electric Bike Network so, as a local, I decided to give their electric bicycles a spin.
An Electric Bike

I am a small lady cyclist, and I had turned up for my taster in jeans, so I wasn’t giving the Electric Bike Network (EBN) an easy job of satisfying my needs from the outset, and when they presented me with a medium-sized male-oriented mountain bike complete with full saddle bags, I looked at them sceptically.

A new off-road trail for Aston Hill in the Chilterns

The Chilterns is home to Aston Hill, a Forestry Commission owned area dedicated to off-road mountain biking famous for its downhill runs created by our very own Off-Road Officer, Ian Warby. An added attraction is a new trail, 'Surface to Air'...

Aston Hill has long been a favourite of riders across the South-East, including riders and writers for Mountain Bike Rider (MBR) magazine.  It is situated just outside Wendover in the Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Beauty and features five graded downhill (DH) runs, a 4X track and a two-part cross-country (XC) loop.

Guide to Cycling and Touring in the Chilterns

Thinking of touring around the South East of England? With good train and bus links to either the Bucks, Herts or Wokingham end of the Chilterns, it's worth an explore. Here is a basic guide to some of the listed routes around the Chilterns.

Chiltern Heritage Trail

The scenic Chiltern Heritage Cycle Trail links the historic towns and parishes of the Chiltern District and includes some of the area's most popular tourist attractions and places of historic interest.

The Trail is divided into three loops, each covering approximately 25 miles. The loops are quite distinct in terms of scenery and character, and each is named after a famous historical figure linked to the District.

Cycle trail maps, provided by the Chilterns District Council, are available online:
