Grand designs in Manchester

Manchester recently came second in CTC’s league table of political support in eight Core Cities in England, with 41% of councillors supporting Space for Cycling. An inspirational new video shows how an ambitious plan to redesign a major route in the city will segregate buses and taxis from pedestrians and cyclists. Meanwhile, Newcastle came out top in the list, with the backing of 67% of councillors but Sheffield could only manage a paltry 11%.

Park life

Vine 80x80.jpg
BBC TV and radio presenter Jeremy Vine was stopped for speeding this week – on his bike! Caught by police using a radar gun in Hyde Park doing 16mph rather than the limit of 5mph, Vine apologised but later tweeted: "If cyclists are forced to travel at walking pace, they will return to the roads and mix it with trucks." Meanwhile, singer Bono suffered serious injuries while cycling in Central Park.

Get radical

Radical Rick 2 80x80.jpg
Those readers of a certain age might remember Radical Rick, a kind of cartoon predecessor of trials rider Danny MacAskill, whose latest video shows him looping-the-loop on a barge on the River Thames. Unlike Danny, however, Rick rode a BMX – BBC take note! – and was the creation of artist Damian Fulton. In a recent interview, he explains the inspiration behind his cycling superhero.

The Wiggo effect continues

Hill Climb Girl 80x80.jpg
Another cartoon superhero takes centre stage in an extraordinary film from Japan. ‘Hillclimb Girl’ features a young Japanese schoolgirl who is inspired by Bradley Wiggins’ epic ride in the Tour de France to try and beat her male school friend up a hill. Swapping her school skirt for Team Sky’s Lycra, her fierce determination to win is shown in the amazingly detailed illustrations.
